Knowledge and Memory: Western Studies on Ukrainian Nationalism in World War II during the Cold War.

The lecture examines historical research in the Cold War and its relationship to public debates on Ukrainian nationalism during the Second World War. The starting point is the observation that during this period, especially in the 1980s, ideas about Ukrainian nationalism spread among the Western public that continue to play a role until today for the fact that the motif of current Russian propaganda, namely that Ukraine is ruled by a “Nazi regime”, has at times found considerable resonance in Western countries as well. The lecture examines the relationship between the views that spread during this period and the findings of historical research up to the end of the Cold War. It is part of a larger research project that explores images and knowledge about Ukrainian nationalism in the second half of the twentieth century.
